What you need to run digital scenery

Short answer: Six things: content (the scenery), playback software (StagePlayer or Stage Studio), a computer (Mac or Windows) with its own screen, connection hardware (usually an HDMI cable), an output (a projector, LED wall or TV) and a surface to project on (a screen, cyc, painted flat or light-colored wall).

# You need Notes
1 Content Scenery from Broadway Media (Scenic Projections or digital backdrops), or your own media in Stage Studio.
2 Playback software StagePlayer (free) or Stage Studio.
3 A computer A Mac or Windows laptop or desktop that meets the system requirements. iPads and Chromebooks won't work.
4 Connection hardware A high-speed HDMI cable up to 50 feet, or CAT6 with HDMI adapters for longer runs. See Which cable to use.
5 An output Usually a projector. An ultra short-throw projector of at least 5,000 lumens is recommended. An LED wall or TV also works.
6 A surface Front projection: a cyclorama, painted flats or a light-colored wall. Rear projection: a semi-translucent screen.

The one rule people miss

You need two displays: the computer's own screen for the operator controls, and the projector for the scenery. Set the projector as an extended display, not a mirror. See Why you need two displays and Extend your display to a projector.

Next steps

  1. Check your computer: StagePlayer system requirements.
  2. Plan the cabling: Which cable to use.
  3. Pick a layout: Computer setups that work.
  4. Install your software: StagePlayer quick start or Download and install Stage Studio.
