Get a larger projected image

Short answer: Move the projector farther from the surface, or use a projector or lens with a lower throw ratio (short throw or ultra short throw). A farther projector makes a bigger but dimmer picture.

Applies to: Any projector used with StagePlayer or Stage Studio · Last reviewed: October 17, 2026

What sets the picture size

  • Throw ratio: distance compared with picture size. At 1.5:1, the projector sits 1.5 feet from the surface for every foot of (diagonal) picture width. A ratio below 1:1 (short throw) gives a large picture from close up.
  • Placement: the farther the projector, the bigger the picture, and the dimmer it looks.

If you can't make it bigger

Digital scenery doesn't have to fill the whole upstage wall.

  1. Shrink the surface: frame the projection with travelers or curtains and keep the acting area full width.
  2. Add a built set downstage of the surface (platforms, groundrows, flats) to add depth and entrances.

Check the software too

If the picture has black bars or is cut off, check the display mode. Broadway Media scenery is 16:9. In StagePlayer, see Outputs, display mode and zoom.
